The software I use is Electrical Bid Manager by Vision Infosoft, but before we can discuss that process, we need to look at the foundation of commercial estimating software which is the “Labor Unit”. My preferred method of compiling a labor budget is with commercial estimating software. However, before I conclude this series of talks I am going to show you how to create your own. It is possible, but in my experience very uncommon, to get a useful labor breakdown from your company when you assume responsibility for a project. Depending on the type of construction and your company’s level of detail, estimates could be calculated as a cost per square foot, by the hole, through historical company data utilizing proprietary spreadsheets, by hand with a detailed takeoff utilizing commercial construction labor data or with commercial estimating software. There are many different ways to compile an estimate. Specifically, you need to understand your labor budget. If you are going to manage a project and assume responsibility for meeting the estimate budget, you need to understand how that budget was created. ![]()
